Jakarta, Indonesia, 1 August 2024: ERIA welcomed members of the Keidanren Nature Conservation Council (KNCC), a council under Keidanren - Japan Business Federation, led by its Chairman, Mr Keiji Nishizawa, to its office. After visiting different partners and sites in Indonesia, the delegation visited ERIA to exchange views, particularly on environmental issues.
Mr Toru Furuichi, Chief Operating Officer of ERIA, warmly welcomed the delegation from Japan. He subsequently gave a brief introductory presentation on ERIA, covering its establishment in 2008 and highlighting notable activities in recent years. He emphasised ERIA’s significant contributions to the ASEAN region, particularly in environmental fields, which have been highly sought-after by member states.
Mr Nishizawa of the KNCC explained that the council he leads supports sustainable business practices in Japan and upholds three main paths to achieve its sustainability goals: (1) Green Transformation (GX), (2) Circular Economy, and (3) Nature Positive (conservation of biodiversity).
Following this, Mr Reo Kawamura, Director for Environmental Policy and Director of the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris at ERIA, briefed the KNCC members on ERIA's most salient environmental projects and activities. He highlighted:
Knowledge sharing of ASEAN countries’ laws and regulations related to marine plastic
Promotion of regional private sector’s good practices to reduce plastic waste
Research projects on plastic leakage prevention from plastic recycling facilities and the informal sector in ASEAN countries
A pilot project on reducing the use of single-use plastics (SUP) at the source using behavioural change or ‘nudge’ tools
A pilot project on mangrove conservation in Indonesia by establishing a community-based clean-up protocol and awareness-raising tools
Mr Kawamura underscored the numerous regional partners and platforms with which ERIA has closely worked to create effective impact and synergy for the benefit of the ASEAN region.
During the open Q&A session, members of the KNCC and ERIA engaged in lively discussions. KNCC members sought ERIA’s views on various topics, including tackling littering and plastic waste leakage, encouraging peer-to-peer learning within the ASEAN+3 region, effective support for collecting plastic waste already leaked into the oceans, bridging the gap between increasing plastic waste and weak waste management infrastructure, and how Japan can learn from global expertise on the circularity of natural resources.
At the end of the meeting, Mr Nishizawa thanked ERIA for sharing its regional knowledge. Both ERIA and Keidanren expressed a desire for continued collaboration between the two institutions.
