GAEA (Global Action for Environment Awareness Plc) is a leading solid waste management company based in Cambodia. GAEA was founded in 2007 with its ambitious vision to lead the way in sustainable waste management by implementing innovative solutions that protect the environment, enhance community well-being, and promote a circular economy in Cambodia. Moreover, the concrete mission of GAEA is to provide efficient, reliable, and environmentally responsible waste management services by striving to reduce waste, recycle more, and work in partnership with communities and businesses to create a cleaner, healthier future. GAEA provides services such as municipal solid waste collection, integrated municipal public cleaning, extra services, sale of waste containers, recycling projects, and public awareness raising. Currently, GAEA operates in the four largest cities in Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Serei Saophoan and Steung Saen.
As a part of the Siem Reap Smart City Roadmap, GAEA has been collaborating with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to conduct an initiative project through a mobile application namely the “Smart Clean Siem Reap” which is a pilot project in Slakram Commune where people are able to utilize an internet-based system for the smart collection and transportation of waste with the main objective of modernizing waste management. Through the mobile app, the residents receive information about real-time garbage truck locations and pickup times. By using this application, people in the pilot area are able to streamline waste collection processes, thus making them more effective, efficient, and convenient. This project stands as a pioneer in the digitalization of waste management in Cambodia, further underscoring GAEA's commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability.
In addition to its core services, GAEA has initiated various recycling programs that not only manage wastes but also repurpose materials, transforming them into valuable resources. In 2019, the glass to sand project is another pioneer project with aiming to collect glass wastes in Siem Reap city in order to convert into reused bottles, gravel, cullet, and sand which can be used for the construction purposes. This glass to sand project has reduced about a half of glass waste quantity unloading in the landfill and dumpsites while promoting the waste sorting behaviors in the community. Furthermore, GAEA is also open to collaborate with any partners who have any innovative solutions for the sustainable waste management beyond the waste disposal. In 2023, GAEA collaborated with Soken Group to conduct a pilot trial for waste-to-energy. The equipment was from Soken Group was able to autonomously sort waste and convert plastic into biofuel through pyrolysis.
With ongoing efforts to integrate innovative solutions, GAEA’s success is significantly the result of the strong support of local authorities, partners, and community engagement. Meanwhile, GAEA upholds its strong commitment to environmental protection by ensuring that it will continue to play a pivotal role in the fight against pollution and the journey toward a cleaner and healthier Cambodia.
