The Reusable & Returnable Packaging Solutions to Replace Single-Use Plastics

Alner, formerly Koinpack, is an Indonesian startup that offers daily essentials such as detergent, shampoo, and food products in reusable packaging, reducing the need for single-use packaging. Alner is originally a Zero Waste Living Lab venture by Enviu that strives to build reuse business that drive systemic change towards a circular economy that addresses the plastic issue. Their overall aim is to replace single-use flexibles to improve sustainability. They collaborate with fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands to provide refillable versions of conventional products, creating a circular reuse ecosystem. Customers can purchase products online and through community-based Points of Sale, and return empty packaging for cashback, which Alner collects, cleans, and refills. This system promotes sustainability by preventing single-use packaging waste, ensuring returned packaging is sanitized, refilled, and recycled at the end of its lifecycle. This closed-loop, circular system prevents plastic waste while maintaining consumer convenience and brand operations.

Since 2020, Alner has expanded to over 60 points of sale in the Greater Jakarta Region, selling more than 40,00 products and avoiding over 400,000 single use plastics disposal. Alner’s innovative model has earned various awards, including the ADB Innovation HUb’s Healthy Oceans Technology Innovation Challenge award.
