Capacity Building

Overview

Mandated to support ASEAN+3 Member States in tackling plastic pollution, ERIA's Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris champions capacity building as one of its five core pillars.

To turn this commitment into action, the Centre established a dedicated Capacity building division in 2025. This strategic move was designed to enhance both the quantity and quality of our initiatives, ensuring they remain closely aligned with the region's evolving needs and priorities.

Through this initiative, the Centre collaborates with leading institutions, experts, and policymakers across the region to design and deliver targeted training and workshops for the most relevant stakeholders.

Since its establishment, the Centre has successfully rolled out a series of impactful capacity building workshops:

  • CIRCONOMICS: Circular Economics for Business Transformation

CIRCONOMICS supports SMEs/MSMEs to adopt circular economy practices by raising awareness, providing practical implementation tools, and connecting businesses with financial enablers to accelerate circular innovation and adoption.

  • DECIDE: Data and Evidence to Catalyse Informed Decision-making and Engagement

DECIDE aims to strengthen the capacity of policymakers and researchers to translate plastic monitoring data into evidence-based policies while encouraging research that supports science-based solutions to plastic pollution.

  • INCLUSEA: Inclusion of the Informal Sector in Plastic Waste Management in Southeast Asia

INCLUSEA aims to empower informal waste workers—especially women and vulnerable groups—by strengthening their role in decision-making and promoting inclusive plastic waste management policies.
