ERIA Participates in 10th Meeting of ASEAN Working Group on Chemicals and Waste (AWGCW)

Siem Reap, 9 April 2025: ERIA’s Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris took part in the Open Session of the 10th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Chemicals and Waste (AWGCW), hosted by Cambodia and chaired by Indonesia.

During the session, the Regional Knowledge Centre’s Director, Mr Reo Kawamura showcased ERIA’s recent accomplishments in supporting ASEAN’s efforts to combat plastic pollution. These include co-hosting of the ASEAN Conference on Combating Plastic Pollution (ACCPP), participating in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) meetings to support the development of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, forming networks and partnerships against plastic pollution with various stakeholders, and implementing behavioural change projects to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics.

Mr Kawamura also presented the completion of the End-of-Life Vehicles Recycling Project, which identified 11 challenges and proposed eight policy recommendations for the ASEAN region. These outcomes will further contribute to another initiative, titled ‘Master Plan Outline for the ASEAN-Japan Co-Creation Initiative for the Next-Generation Automotive Industry,’ which was entrusted to ERIA at the ASEAN–Japan Summit in December 2023.
