Siem Reap, 22 October 2024 – A delegation from the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) participated in the 6th Meeting of the Working Group on Marine Litter (WGML-6), held by the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) from 21 to 22 October 2024. The meeting served as a preparatory step for the upcoming fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5), scheduled for 25 November – 1 December 2024, and the 26th Intergovernmental Meeting (IGM 26) of COBSEA, which will take place from 23–25 October 2024.
Mr Reo Kawamura, Director for Environment Policy at ERIA, presented on 22 October during the session titled ’Knowledge-sharing from partners in the region,’ representing both ERIA and its institutional partner, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
In his presentation, Mr Kawamura showcased the initiatives undertaken by ERIA and IGES to combat plastic pollution in ASEAN. He highlighted four key activities led by ERIA:
Co-hosting the ASEAN Conference for Combatting Plastic Pollution (ACCPP) 2024 with the Government of Lao PDR and UNDP Laos.
Gathering and sharing knowledge on the progress of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in ASEAN+3 countries via ERIA’s website.
Reporting on achievements and future actions in the Behavioural Change project aimed at reducing single-use plastic consumption.
Preventing plastic leakage from the recycling industry in targeted ASEAN cities.
For the IGES segment, Mr Kawamura discussed four activities IGES is supporting:
Assisting Cambodia in developing its upcoming National Action Plan for Tackling Marine Litter.
Facilitating evidence-based policymaking in targeted Cambodian cities.
Tracking the G20 Action Plan on Marine Litter to measure progress more effectively.
Supporting regional initiatives, including the World Bank’s SEA-MaP project, and actively contributing to the INC process.
The presentation highlighted ERIA and IGES's commitment to regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing to address the critical issue of marine litter and plastic pollution.
