Tokyo/Jakarta, 20 September 2024: The Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) have announced the launch of Phase II of the Breaking the Plastic Habit in Asia project. This phase aims to test behaviour-centred interventions to reduce the use and waste of single-use plastics in cities and communities across the ASEAN region.
Phase II will build on the pilot projects conducted during Phase I and will generate practical knowledge and tools for applying behaviour-centred approaches in real-world settings. One of the key outcomes of Phase II will be a series of case studies designed to guide policymakers, businesses, and civil society in developing pragmatic skills to implement behaviour-centred solutions for environmental challenges. In addition, a new measurement framework will be piloted to assess the effectiveness of ‘nudge’ interventions across the region.
To support these objectives, ERIA and IGES issued a call for implementing partners from ASEAN countries to plan, implement, and monitor pilot projects. By the submission deadline of 31 August 2024, 105 proposals were received from various ASEAN cities. An evaluation committee, comprising six experts from IGES and ERIA, rigorously reviewed the applications using a clear set of criteria, including the description of the project context (settings and target audience), behavioural insights to be tested, and monitoring methodologies.
Following a thorough selection process, the following six implementing partners from six ASEAN countries were chosen:

Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Indonesia
Econox Laos – Plastic Free Laos Label, Lao PDR
Institute of Civil Engineering, University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), the Philippines
Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand
Nopa Design, Công Ty TNHH, Viet Nam
Three of these partners – CSEAS (Indonesia), UPD (the Philippines), and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) – previously participated in Phase I and will now re-engage in Phase II with an expanded project scope.
The selected partners will attend a project launch event and capacity-building workshop in October 2024. Afterward, they will carry out their projects from January to August 2025.
