In Singapore, the marine plastic litter issue is addressed by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), formerly known as the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR), through one of its statutory boards, the National Environment Agency (NEA). In 2020, an Interagency Taskforce on Marine Litter consisting of nine agencies and chaired by the MSE was established to coordinate and implement policies on marine litter (MSE, 2022). The NEA, along with the National Parks Board, is tasked with providing technical support to this Taskforce (MSE, 2022). The NEA is also tasked with administering a number of environmental laws in Singapore, including the Environmental Protection and Management Act 1999, Environmental Public Health Act 1987, and Resource Sustainability Act 2019 which are relevant to plastic waste (NEA, n.d.).
